Each year, the Glastonbury festival produces around 2,000 tonnes of waste – that's the amount of rubbish left behind in bins and on the ground. In 2019, the festival banned the sale of plastic and saw a huge reduction in the amount of plastic on site.1
The organisers stopped plastic from being purchased in bars, shops and backstage areas and cut the number of plastic bottles being sold from more than a million in 2017 to zero in 2019. Traders must supply only compostable or reusable cutlery, plates, and straws.

Many other festivals are set to follow Glastonbury’s lead. Previously, venues relied on the convenience of single-use plastic items because of their disposability.
However, ‘Unfolding the Single-Use Plastics Directive’ – a report from Zero Waste Europe - showed more than 25 million tons of plastic waste are generated every year in Europe. Less than 30% of this waste is collected or recycled, and 85% of marine pollution is thought to be plastic waste. 2
In response to the damage being done by plastic pollution, the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD) was introduced. SUPD legislation aims to reduce pollution from plastic products made for single use.
